Unit 5 Semester 2
Earth's Resources
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| abiotic | not biotic; that is, not of, relating to, or caused by living organisms |
| alien species | species not native to an area; species that invade the ecosystem and outcompete the native species, causing the native species to decline, potentially to extinction |
| aquifer | a water bearing underground rock formation, or a groundwater reservoir |
| biodiversity | the variety of species and total number of individuals of each species living in a defined area |
| biotic | relating to factors that are associated with or result from the activities of living organisms |
| community | all of the populations that live and interact with each other in a particular area |
| conservation biology | the interdisciplinary study of biology that addresses the effects humans have on the environment and that seeks to protect and conserve biological diversity |
| divide | the line of separation, whether a ridge, summit, or narrow tract of high ground, between two drainage basins |
| drainage basin | area from which a given stream and its tributaries receive water |
| extinction | the disappearance of all members of a species so that the species no longer occurs anywhere |
| fossil fuel | a general term for any hydrocarbon that can be used as fuel; chiefly petroleum, natural gas, and coal, which are derived from the organic remains of ancient organisms |
| groundwater | all subsurface water, as distinct from surface water |
| hazardous waste | harmful substances released or discarded into the environment |
| nonrenewable resource | a resource that does not replenish itself or replenishes so slowly that once used, the resource is gone |
| nuclear fission | a process in which atomic nucleii are split to produce heat |
| population | all of the members of one species that live in a common area and whose population dynamics are different from those of other populations |
| renewable resource | a resource that is replaced as it is used |
| species | a taxonomic category that represents a group of individual organisms that resemble one another closely and have the ability to interbreed |
| stewardship | the careful management of and responsibility for something, such as our environment and natural resources, that is entrusted to our care |
| succession | the change in species composition in a defined area over time |
| watershed | originally, the line, ridge or high ground separating two drainage basins; used now to describe an area drained by or contributing water to a stream, lake or other water body |
