biodiversity the variety of species and total number of individuals of each species living in a defined area
biotic relating to factors that are associated with or result from the activities of living organisms
community all of the populations that live and interact with each other in a particular area
conservation biology the interdisciplinary study of biology that addresses the effects humans have on the environment and that seeks to protect and conserve biological diversity
divide the line of separation, whether a ridge, summit, or narrow tract of high ground, between two drainage basins
drainage basin area from which a given stream and its tributaries receive water
extinction the disappearance of all members of a species so that the species no longer occurs anywhere
fossil fuel a general term for any hydrocarbon that can be used as fuel; chiefly petroleum, natural gas, and coal, which are derived from the organic remains of ancient organisms
groundwater all subsurface water, as distinct from surface water
hazardous waste harmful substances released or discarded into the environment
nonrenewable resource a resource that does not replenish itself or replenishes so slowly that once used, the resource is gone
nuclear fission a process in which atomic nucleii are split to produce heat
population all of the members of one species that live in a common area and whose population dynamics are different from those of other populations
renewable resource a resource that is replaced as it is used
species a taxonomic category that represents a group of individual organisms that resemble one another closely and have the ability to interbreed
stewardship the careful management of and responsibility for something, such as our environment and natural resources, that is entrusted to our care
succession the change in species composition in a defined area over time
watershed originally, the line, ridge or high ground separating two drainage basins; used now to describe an area drained by or contributing water to a stream, lake or other water body
