The Cycles of Matter
sec.1 pgs. 32-35
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| condensation | the change of state from a gas to liquid |
| precipitation | any form of water that falls to the Earth's surface from the clouds |
| ground water | water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. |
| runoff | the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc. |
| infilteration | liquid that has been passed through a filter |
| porosity | is a measure of how much of a rock is open space. This space can be between grains or within cracks or cavities of the rock. Permeability is a measure of the ease with which a fluid (water in this case) can move through a porous rock. |
| permeability | In electromagnetism, permeability is the measure of the ability of a material to support the formation of a magnetic field within itself. Hence, it is the degree of magnetization that a material obtains in response to an applied magnetic field. |
| aquifer | An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, or silt) from which groundwater can be extracted using a water well. The study of water flow in aquifers and the characterization |
| transpiration | Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Transpiration is essentially evaporation of water from plant leaves |
