Circulatory System Terminology

arteries blood vessels that carry the blood away from the heart
veins blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart
capilllaries the smallest branches of the blood vessels that carry blood from the arteries to the body cells and then to the veins
pulse the sensation of the blood beinf forced against the walls of the arteries each time the heart contracts
blood pressure the amount of pressure against the walls of the blood vessels as ttthe blood circulates
thrombus a blood clot that forms and remains at the site
embolus a blood clot that forms at one site, but which breaks free and travels throught the body in the blood vessels
coronary arteries blood vessels around the outside of the heart which supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients
arteriosclerosis a build up of mineral deposits inside a blood vessel which makes it smaller inside and decreases the volume of blood flow
atherosclerosis a build up of fatty acids inside a blood vessel which makes it smaller inside and decreases the volume of blood flow
coronary artery disease CAD- narrowing of the coronary arteries due to arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis
angina chest pain that occurs when the heart muscle does not receive an adequate supply of blood
myocardial infarction "MI" -heart attack
Congestive Heart Failure "CHF"- heart cannot adequately pump the blood
Phlebitis inflammation of a vein
thrombophlebitis inflammation of a vein with the development of a clot
aneurysm a weak area in the wall of a blood vessel
varicose vein the walls of the vein are stretched and dilated
hypertension high blood pressure; reading is greater than 140/90 mmHg
hypotension low blood pressure; reading is less than 90/60 mmHg
