vocabulary from the Big Bang unit

| cosmic microwave background radiation | thermal radiation (from the big bang) filling the observable universe almost uniformly, discovered in 1964 |
| red shift | when light seen coming from an object that is moving away is increased in wavelength, or shifted to the red end of the spectrum |
| dark matter | a type of matter hypothesized to account for a large part of the total mass in the universe; it cannot be directly seen |
| big bang theory | the prevailing cosmological model that describes the early development of the universe |
| expanding universe | a concept of the universe in which the galaxies are moving away from each other |
| Milky Way Galaxy | the spiral galaxy that contains our solar system |
