cosmic microwave background radiation thermal radiation (from the big bang) filling the observable universe almost uniformly, discovered in 1964
red shift when light seen coming from an object that is moving away is increased in wavelength, or shifted to the red end of the spectrum
dark matter a type of matter hypothesized to account for a large part of the total mass in the universe; it cannot be directly seen
big bang theory the prevailing cosmological model that describes the early development of the universe
