| Under what conditions will the vortex of a tornado form? | When air masses of very different temperature and humidity conditions meet. |
| What is the main source of heat energy for weather on the earth? | The sun |
| Describe the main cause of tornadoes? | Tornadoes form when two air masses of sharply different temperature and humidity meet, normally over land. |
| Describe the water cycle. | Water evaporates from the earth’s surface as it changes to a water vapor that then rises with rising, warm air. At higher altitudes, where temps are cool, that water vapor condenses into drops of water that fall (precipitates) back to the Earth. |
| Describe how clouds form. | Clouds form at low air pressure conditions where the low warm air is pushed upwards to higher cool temperature altitudes, causing water vapor to condense. |
| What term describes a circulation of air or water that is caused by uneven heating? | Convection current |
| In what ways are a hurricane and a tornado alike? | Both contain winds that spiral very rapidly |
| What is the main cause for seasonal variations in temperatures in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? | Changes in the earth’s tilt as it orbits the sun |
| When a hurricane makes landfall, what is the greatest danger to residents? | Storm surge |
| Describe at least two characteristics of air masses. | 1. )Air masses have a consistent temperature and humidity throughout the mass. 2. )Air Masses take on the temperature and humidity of the surface the mass is over. |
| What special layer is found in the stratosphere and how does it protect the Earth? | The Ozone Layer-It protects the Earth from harmful UV radiation. |
| What is a sea breeze, and why does it occur? | Sea breezes are winds that travel from the sea over the shore. They occur because the air above the land is warmer than the air above the ocean. |
| Draw and explain why the temperature at the equator and poles are different. Think about the thickness of the atmosphere. | On earth, the equator receives more sunshine than do the poles. The equator, which points directly at the sun, has a much more intense effect than the glancing rays spread over a much larger area of the curving surface near the poles. |
| Describe the effect of surface temperature on the air above the surface | Air takes on the temperature of the surface that it is directly above. |
| Brian connects two Convection Tubes. He adds smoke to one cylinder. The smoke immediately sinks to the bottom of the cylinder and moves into the second cylinder and then rises. Describe what is occurring. | He connected one hot and one cold cylinder. He added smoke at the top of the cold cylinder. |
