Earth's Structure
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mantle | The layer beneath the crust and above the core |
| Pangea | The theory that all continents were once part of one large landmass. |
| Inner Core | The exact middle of the Earth's center that is made of extremely hot, solid metal |
| Outer Core | Part of the Earth's center that is made from molten (liquid) iron and nickel |
| Crust | The layer of the Earth that lies above the mantle and is the Earth's hard outer shell. It has two categories: oceanic and continental. |
| Fault | A crack in the Earth's surface that was caused by movement |
| Continental Drift | The gradual movement of continents over time over the Earth's surface |
| Lithosphere | An area that includes the Earth's crust and upper mantle |
| Asthenosphere | The middle and lower mantle that includes magma |
| Convection Currents | The current by liquids or gases when there's a difference in temperature |
| Sea-floor Spreading | The process where tectonic plates move apart, magma is forced up, cools, then forms new crust at the bottom of the ocean. |
| Subduction | The process where one plate slides down and beneath another plate |
| Divergent boundary | When plates move away from each other |
| Convergent | When plates move towards/on top of each other |
| Transform | When plates slide past one another |
| Oceanic ridge | Where sea-floor spreading occurs |
