Types of Drug Preperation

| cream | a nongreasy, semisolid preparation used on the skin |
| elixir | sweetened & aromatic solution of alcohol, oil or soapy emollient & applied to the skin |
| extract | concentrated form of drug made from vegs or animals |
| gel or jelly | clear or translucent semisolid that liquefies when applied to the skin |
| liniment | medication mixed with alchohol, oil or soapy emolient & applied to the skin |
| lotion | med in a liquid suspension applied to the skin |
| lozenge (troche) | flat, round, or oval preparation that dissolves & releases a drug when held in the mouth |
| ointment (salve, unction) | semisolid preparation of one or more durgs used for application to the skin & mucous membrane |
| paste | preparation like an ointment, but thicker & stiff, that penetrates the skin less than an ointment |
| pill | 1 or more drugs mixed with a cohesive material, in oval, round, or flattened shapes |
| powder | finely ground drug or durgs; some are used internally, others externally |
| suppository | 1 or several drugs mixed witha firm base such as gelatin & shaped for insertion into body (the rectum) the base dissolves gradually at body tem, releasing the drug |
| syrup | aqueous solution of sugar often used to disquise unpleasant-tasting drugs |
| tablet | powdered drug compressed into hard small disc; some readily broken along a scored line; others enteric coated to prevent them from dissolving in the stomach |
| tincture | an alcoholic or water & alcohol solution prepared from drugs derived from plants |
| transdermal patch | semipermeable membrane shaped in the form of a disc or patch that contains a drug to be absorbed through the skin over a long period of time |
