TermDefinition
observation act of making and recording a measurement
inference conclusions based on observations and experience
Qualitative describes the features of an object
Quantitative describes the object using a number value
Situation A problem that needs to be solved. (make sure to write as a question)
Prediction To make a hypothesis or an educated guess.
Investigation To conduct an experiment to scientifically solve a question
Control/Control Group the normal situation used as a reference for comparison to the experimental group
Experimental Group the group being tested with the independent variable
Independent Variable the one factor that is being changed in the experimental group.
Dependent Variable The variable that will be measured---it is the result or effect of the independent variable.
Controlled Variables All of the other variables that must be the same or constant between the control and experimental groups.
controlled experiment An experiment in which there is only one difference between the control and experimental group.
sample size the number of objects tested in the experiment
Multiple trials means that any scientific experiment needs to be completed more than once.
repeatability the ability to repeat the same answer or data.
