Fossils - Vocabulary

TermDefinition
fossil record the history of the Earth shown by the study of fossils found in layers of sedimentary rock
lava magma that has flowed out onto Earth's surface
magma melted rock below the Earth's surface
mold fossil an impression or print of an organism's bones, shell, etc.
body fossil fossil created when the entire organism is trapped in a material where it cannot decompose
fossil remains of an ancient organism
trace fossil evidence of an organism's life, such as bite marks, nests, droppings, or claw scratches
cast fossil a replica or copy of an organism that has been remade by minerals
