Unit 6 Vocab Part 2

QuestionAnswer
orographic effect effect that mountains have on weather and climate; blockage of precipitation from the leeward side of mountains
cumuliform clouds dense, white, fluffy, flatbased clouds with a multiple rounded top and a well defined outline, usually formed by the ascent of thermally unstable air masses
stratiform clouds low altitude cloud formation consisting of a horizontal layer of gray clouds
precipitation generally from clouds, the falling of water as liquid (rain) or solid (snow, ice, hail)
evaporation change of phase from liquid to vapor (gas) occurring at the surface of that liquid
transpiration process which adds water to the atmosphere by transpiring, especially through the stromata of plant tissue or the pores of the skin
vapor pressure pressure exerted by water within the atmosphere
latent heat energy released or absorbed during a phase change, such as a liquid to a gas, but with no temperature change involved
potential energy stored energy or energy at rest as a result of its state or position
phase change change of a material through states of solid, liquid, and gas
kinetic energy energy of action, motion, or at work
melting changing from a solid to a liquid state by application of heat or pressure or both
freezing pass from liquid to solid state by loss of heat as in water to ice
heat of fusion amount of latent heat involved in melting or freezing
heat of vaporization amount of latent heat involved in evaporization or condensation
specific heat amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 1g of any substance 1°C, measured in calories
conduction transfer of energy, usually heat, by contact from one atom to another atom within a liquid, gas, or solid
convection transfer of energy in gases and liquid due to differences in substances' densities
radiation objects' electromagnetic wave transmission
convection cell circulatory motion in which heat energy is transferred from one place to another due to differences in density
current movement or flow of warm or cold air in a direction
radiational cooling decrease in temperature at the earths surface caused by energy radiating out into space

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
