Unit 6 Vocab Part 1

weather

QuestionAnswer
weather state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure
temperature specific degree of hotness or coldness as indicated on or referred to on a standard scale
dew point pressure temperature at which water vapor present in the air saturates air and begins to condense; dew forms
relative humidity the percent of saturation in the air; the expression of the ratio between the actual amount of water vapor in the atmosphere and the air's capacity at that temperature
psychrometer instrument that determines dew point and relative humidity
dry/wet bulb thermometer instrument used to determine the dew point temperature and the relative humidity
air pressure force exerted due to the weight of air
barometer instrument used to measure air pressure
millibars unit used to measure air pressure
isobars type of isoline on a weather map used to indicate equal air pressure points
wind movement of air caused by Earth systems
wind vane weather instrument used to determine the direction of the wind
anemometer instrument with rotating cups used to determine wind speed
condensation change in state from vapor to liquid, the loss of water vapor from warmer air onto a cooler surface, such as the condensation on an ice water glass
monsoon wind system, most often with heavy rains that influences large climatic regions and reverses directions seasonally
sea breeze local wind blowing from the sea toward the land when the air pressure is higher over the sea than over the land
land breeze local wind blowing from the land toward the sea when the air pressure over the land is greater than the air pressure over the sea
coriolis effect observed path of an object or fluid at the surface of the earth undergoing a predictable horizontal deflection
condensation nuclei solid surface onto which water vapor may condense to form liquid droplets, in the formation of clouds
deposition the process of water vapor changing directly into ice crystals
dew condensation occurring on earths surface
frost deposition of minute ice crystals formed when water vapor condenses at a temperature below freezing

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
