Native Americans

TermDefinition
Clan A group of families that are related to one another.
Confederation A loose group of governments.
Kachina Spirits that people made masks and dolls about.
Longhouse A long wooden building which several families lived together.
Pit House A house built partly over a hole dug in the earth so that some of its rooms were underground.
Potlatch Special gatherings with feasting and dancing.
Shaman A religious leader and healer that called upon the gods to give people special favors.
Sod Earth cut into blocks or mats that is held together by grass and roots.
Totem Pole A wooden pole with beautifully carved shapes of people and animals.
Travois Two poles fastened to a harness on a dog.
Tepee A cone-shaped tent made with wooden poles set in a circle and tied on top, then covered with buffalo skin.
