| Clan | A group of families that are related to one another. |
| Confederation | A loose group of governments. |
| Kachina | Spirits that people made masks and dolls about. |
| Longhouse | A long wooden building which several families lived together. |
| Pit House | A house built partly over a hole dug in the earth so that some of its rooms were underground. |
| Potlatch | Special gatherings with feasting and dancing. |
| Shaman | A religious leader and healer that called upon the gods to give people special favors. |
| Sod | Earth cut into blocks or mats that is held together by grass and roots. |
| Totem Pole | A wooden pole with beautifully carved shapes of people and animals. |
| Travois | Two poles fastened to a harness on a dog. |
| Tepee | A cone-shaped tent made with wooden poles set in a circle and tied on top, then covered with buffalo skin. |
