Plate Tectonics

QuestionAnswer
What observation first led Alfred Wegener to propose Continental Drift? The margins of the continents fit together like puzzle pieces.
List the two kinds of Crust. Continental Crust and Oceanic Crust.
Describe the convection process. Convection is the method by which energy is transferred through a liquid or a gas via density differences.
Name the large land mass that Wegener proposed existed about 225 million years ago. Pangea.
Name the plate boundary which is created when two plates move apart from one another. Divergent plate boundary.
Name the zone where more dense oceanic crust is sinking beneath less dense continental crust. A subduction zone.
Give the name of the transform fault found in California which marks the interface of the Pacific and American Plates. The San Andreas Fault line.
What is the name for the deepest places known to man upon the face of the Earth. Oceanic Trenches where two oceanic plates converge and bend down into deep Vs.
What is the process by which continents are moved about over millions of years? Sea floor spreading.
Define terranes: Parts of continents that are made up of formerly separate pieces of lithosphere.
Describe Plates: Huge rocks that cover the surface of the Earth. They number about 30.
The collision of one lithospheric plate with another forms a _____ what? Convergent plate boundary.
Name three observable evidences that Earth's surface is dynamic. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain building.
Convection occurs in what part of the mantle? The asthenosphere.
Discuss the mid oceanic ridge. An underwater mountain range formed where new crust is created via sea floor spreading.
Explain a rift valley. A location where the land is being ripped apart by a divergent plate boundary.
Name one Hot Spot in the world. The Hawaiian Islands are an excellent example of such a volcanically active location.
Define lava: Molten rock that has broken through Earth's surface.
List three pieces of evidence cited by Wegener to support his Continental Drift Theory. Climate anomalies, direct fossil comparison, and geologic rock matching.
The layer of mantle with plastic rock which underlies the plates is called the; Asthenosphere.
