| biogeochemical cycle | a pathway by which a chemical substance moves through the biosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere |
| photosynthesis | a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy and carbon dioxide into food (C6H12o6) for the plant |
| respiration | the process by which cells convert food (C6H12O6) and oxygen (O2) into energy, water and carbon dioxide (CO2) |
| reservoir | a large supply or source of something |
| fossil fuels | fuels formed by decomposition of buried dead organisms; fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum and natural gas |
| carbonic acid | an acid formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water |
| organic molecule | any molecule that contains carbon |
| carbon dioxide | a colorless, odorless gas vital to life on Earth (CO2) |
