Term | Definition |

Element | a pure substance where all the atoms are the same (on Periodic Table) |
Subatomic Particle | particles that are smaller than an atom and make up an atom |
Proton | subatomic particle with a positive charge |
Neutron | subatomic particle with a neutral charge |
Electron | subatomic particle with a negative charge |
Matter | anything that has mass and volume |
Atom | the smallest unit of matter |
Atomic Number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom |
Atomic Mass | the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
Mixture | two or more pieces of matter that can be mixed together and seperated |
Solution | two or more pieces of matter that can be mixed together, but are not easily separated |
Compound | made up of two or more kinds of atoms |
Physical Change | no new substance created |
Chemical Change | a new substance is created |
Water Displacement Method | the method used to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object (watch how much the water rises) |
Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
Volume | the amount of space an object takes up |
Density | Mass/Volume, how much matter and object contains in a given amount of space |
Metric System | based on the number 10, and this is the system that is used by Scientists all over the world |
Solids | definite shape and volume |
Liquids | no definite shape, but definite volume |
Gases | no definite shape or volume |
Boiling | a liquid turns into a gas |
Melting | a solid turns into a liquid |
Freezing | a liquid turns into a solid |
