Force and Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Position | Location of an object |
| Motion | An object's change in position relative to a reference point |
| Reference Point | A place or object to which another location is compared |
| Displacement | The straight-line distance between a starting point and an end point |
| Speed | The measure of how quickly distance changes with time |
| Average Speed | Motion over a period of time |
| Instantaneous Speed | The speed of an object at a specific instant in time |
| Velocity | Speed combined with the direction of motion |
| Vector | Physical quantity that has size and direction |
| Acceleration | Measure of how quickly velocity changes |
| Newton's 2nd Law | Acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the net force applied |
| Net Force | The combination of all the forces acting on the object |
| Balanced Forces | A set of forces that cancel one another so that there is no overall force on an object |
| Unbalanced Forces | A set of forces acting on an object that do not cancel each other out |
| Potential Energy | Stored energy or energy of position (PE=mgh) |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of movement (KE=mv-squared) |
