CI#3 Vocabulary

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Volume The amount of space something occupies; the amount of space something takes up
Mass The amount of matter in an object or sample
Matter Anything that has mass and volume
Compress (verb) Reduce the volume of something by applying force/pressure
Closed System Matter cannot be transferred into or out of the system
Open System Matter can be transferred into or out of the system
Particle The smallest piece of a substance that is still that substance
Force a push or a pull
Stock Solution A large volume of reactant that has a premeasured concentration
Excess Reagent or Excess Reactant The extra reactant that remains after the chemical reaction has ended
Limiting Reagent or Limiting Reactant The reactant that limits how much the product can be formed in a chemical reaction; the reaction stops when all of the limiting reagent is used up
