| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photosphere | Star's outer shell where light is radiated. |
| Chromosphere | Sphere of color. Second of 3 main layers in Sun's atmosphere. |
| Corona | Circles of light seen around Sun or Moon. |
| Solar Wind | Flow of charged particles (mainly protons and electrons) that interacts with the magetic feild of Earth. |
| Sunspot | Dark patch that appears periodically on the surface of the Sun. |
| Prominence | Eruption of cool high-density gas from solar chromosphere into corona. |
| Solar Flare | Powerful explosion from Sun's surface. |
| Nuclear Fusion | Two or more nuclei come very close and collide at high speed. |
| Constellation | Groups of stars. |
| Binary Star | System of two stars that revolve around a common mass. |
| Light-year | The distance light travels in one solar year. 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km) A unit in measuring stellar distances. |
| Apparent Magnitude | The magnitude of a star as it appears on Earth. |
| Absolute Magnitude | The magnitude of a star as it would appear to a hypothetical observer. |
| Main-sequence star | Any star lying on a diagonal band. |
| Red Giant | Star in intermediate stage of evolution. Large volume, low surface temp, reddish hue. |
| Supergiant | Luminous star with a diameter that is more than 100 times that of the Sun. |
| Nova | Star that suddenly becomes thousands of times brighter then gradually fades to original intensity. |
| Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram | Graph showing absolute magnitude plotted against surface temp for a group of stars. |
| Protostar | Early stage in evolution of a star. |
| Supernova | Explosion of a star, possibly caused by gravitational collapse. |
| White Dwarf | Star approximately the size of Earth. Has undergone gravitational collapse, is in the final stage of evolution for low-mass stars. |
| Neutron Star | Extremely dense, compact star primarily made of neutrons. |
| Black Hole | Formed at the beginning of the universe or by the gravitational collapse of a star exploding. Gravitational field so intense, no electromagnetic radiation can escape. |
| Galaxy | Large system of stars held together by mutal gravitation and isolated from similar systems my large regions of space. |
| Big Bang Theory | Scientific Theory of the Universe orgininating in an explosion of extrememly high density and temperature. |
