Land Biomes, Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Intertidal Zone an area along ocean shorelines that lies between low and high water lines
Oceanic Zone the region of the open sea that has characteristic life-forms and geography
Neritic Zone a shallow marine environment that is near the shore or over the continental shelf and that is rich in minerals and nutrients produced by biotic activity
Benthic Zone the bottom region of oceans and bodies of fresh water
Ecosystem a community of organisms and their abiotic environment
Littoral Zone a shallow zone in a freshwater habitat where light reaches the bottom and nurtures plants
Open water Zone The zone of a lake or pond that extends from the littoral zone out across the top of the water and that is only as deep as light can reach
Deep Water Zone The zone of a lake or pond below the open water zone, where no light reaches the bottom
Wetland area of land that is periodically underwater
Marsh Treeless wetland where grasses grow
Swamp a wetland where schrubs and trees grow
Permafrost in arctic regions, the permanently frozen layer of soil or subsoil
Grassland a large open area of country covered with grass, especially one used for grazing.
Tundra a treeless plain that is located in the Arctic or Antarctic and that is characterized by very low winter temperatures; short, cool summers;
Coniferous forest a terrestrial biome found in temperate regions of the world with warm summers and cool winters and adequate rainfall to sustain a forest; trees donĀ“t shed
Deciduous forest describes trees that lose their leaves at the end of the growing season
Tropical rainforest
Plankton Organisms that float around the surface and are at the bottom of the food chain
Coral Reefs a limestone ridge found in tropical climates and composed of coral fragments that are deposited around organic remains
Biome a large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities
Desert a region that has little or no vegetation, long periods without rain, and extreme temperatures
