Vocabulary for Matter and Elements
Term | Definition |
---|---|
matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass |
mass | The amount of matter in an object |
volume | The amount of space matter takes up |
density | The mass of a material in a given volume |
atom | The basic particle that all elements are made of |
electrons | The particle of an atom that has a negative charge, it also bonds with other atoms to create everything in the world |
proton | the particle of an atom that has a positive charge and is located inside the nucleus |
neutron | the particle of an atom that that is located on the inside the nucleus with a proton |
Periodic Table | a grid that classifies all elements into rows and columns by there chemical and physical properties |
periods/rows | rows that can tell her how many energy levels an element has |
groups/columns | columns that can tell you how many valence electrons an element has |
valence electrons | electrons that move all around on an energy level of an atom |
atomic number | the amount of protons an element has inside its nucleus |
atomic mass | a measurement of mass for an elements atoms |
chemical property | Substances being able to combine with one another forming new and different compounds and molecules |
physical property | a state of matter that is based on appearance |
ionic bond | what happens when elements lose or gain and electron |
covalent bond | elements sharing electrons during bonding |
chemical change/reaction | when elements bond together through an attractive force |
compound molecule | two or more elements combining together |
mixture | two or more substances combining together but not combined chemically combined |
nobel gasses | the most stable elements |
halogens | very reactive elements |
alkali metals | very reactive elements with only one valance electron |
metalloids | an element between metal and non metal |
