Matter vocabulary

TermDefinition
Element A pure substance where all the atoms are the same.
Subatomic particle Particles that are smaller than an atom and make up an .
Proton Subatomic particle with a positive charge.
Neutron Subatomic particle with a neutral charge.
Electron Subatomic particle with a negative charge
Matter Anything that has mass and volume
Atom The smallest unit of matter
Atomic number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic mass The number of protons AND neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Mixture two or more peaces of matter that can be mixed together and separated
Solution Two or more peaces of matter that can be mixed together but not easily separated.
Compound made up of two or more different kinds of atoms.
physical change No new substance is created
chemical change A new substance is created
Water displacement method The method used to measure the volume of an irregular shaped object.
