Classsifying Element

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Proton A particle in the space inside the nucleus of an atom, which carries one unit of a positive electric charge.
Electron A particle in space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge.
Atomic number The number of protons in an atom.
Molecule A particle that contains more one atom joined together.
Nonmetal An element that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity.
Noble gasses The nonmentallic elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
Metalloids A very small group of elements that have some properties of the metals and some nonmetals.
Periodic table An arrangement of all the known elements in a chart of rows and columns of increasing atomic numbers.
Metal A substance that conducts heat and electricity well.
