classifying elements

proton a particle in the space inside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of postive electric charge.

atomic number the number of protons in a single atom of an element.
molecule a particle that contains two or more atoms joined together.
metals a substance that conducts heat and electricity.
nonmetal a group of elements that are poor conducters of heat and electricity.
noble gases the nonmetallic elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
metalloids a small group of elements with some properties of both metals and nonmetals.
periodic table a chart that shows all of the known elements and their properties.
