Classifying Elements

vocabulary

TermDefinition
proton a particle in the space inside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of positive electric charge.
electron a particle in the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of a negative electric charge.
atomic number the number of protons in a single atom or element.
molecule a particle that contains two or more atoms join together.
metal a substance that collects heat an electricity.
nonmetals a group of elements that are in poor conductors of heat and electricity.
noble gases the nonmetallic elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
metalloids a small group of elements with some properties of both metals and nonmetals.
periodic table a chart that shows all of known elements and their properties.
