Classifing Elements

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Proton A particle in space inside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of positive electric charge
Electron A particle in the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge
Atomic Number The number of protons in a single atom of an element
Molecule A particle that contains two or more atoms joined together
Metal A substance that conducts heat and electricity
Nonmetal A group of elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity
Noble Gases The nonmetallic elements helium , neon , argon , krypton, xenon and radon .
Metalloid A small group of elements with some properties of both metals and nonmetals
Periodic Table A chart that shows all the known elements and their properties
