Classifying Elements

term and definitions

TermDefinition
proton A particle in the space inside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of positive electric charge.
electron A particle in the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge.
atomic number The number of protons in a single atom of an element.
molecule A particle that contains two or more atoms joined together.
metals A substance that conducts heat and electricity.
nonmetal A group of elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
noble gases The nonmetallic elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
metalloids A small group of elements with some properties of both metals and nonmetals.
periodic table A chart that shows all of the know elements and their properties.
