Classifying Elements

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Proton A particle In the space inside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of positive electric charge.
Electron A particle In the space outside the nucleus of an atom that carries one unit of negative electric charge.
Atomic Number The number of protons in a single atom of an element.
Molecule A particle that contains two or more atoms joined together.
Metals A substance that conducts heat and electricity.
Nonmetal A group of elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
Noble Gases The nonmetallic elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
Metalloids A small group of elements with some properties of both metals and nonmetal.
Periodic Table A chart that shows all of the known elements and properties.
