Earthquake vocab

TermDefinition
Fault a break in earths crust where rock on one side moves in relation to rock on the other side
earthquake A vibration in earths crust caused by the release of energy at a fault.
focus The point inside earth where an earthquake begins
epicenter the point on earths surface directly above the focus of an earthquake
P-waves Primary waves; the fastest waves; the first waves to be detected; they compress and expand the ground as they travel. (push-pull)
S-waves Secondary waves; the second fastest waves; the move across the direction in which the p-waves are traveling. move up or down or side to side
Surface waves travel along earths surface some shake ground side to side; others roll like waves; both cause most damage to buildings during earthquakes
Seismograph an instrument that detects earthquake waves
richer scale uses sizes of waves on the seismograph to determine how strong an earthquake is
moment magnitude uses seismograph to determine the magnitude of earthquake waves to estimate earthquakes energy more accurate
Tsunami large waves or giant wall of water caused by earthquake's on the ocean floor
Mercalli intensity scale a seismic scale used for measuring the intensity of an earthquake.
