Properties of Matter
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are atoms? | Smallest Unit of Matter |
| What is matter? | Anything that has mass and volume |
| What are some examples of matter? | Humans, smoke, textbook, water, a ladybug |
| What are some examples of non-matter? | Energy - Light and Sound |
| What is mass? | How much matter is in something |
| What is weight? | The pull of gravity on an object |
| What is the difference of mass and weight on Earth and the moon? | The weight of an object depends on the gravitational pull. Mass stays the same not matter where it is |
| What is an element? | Contains only one type of atom |
| What is a molecule? | Two or more atoms are chemically combined |
| How can you separate compounds? | By breaking the bonds between atoms |
| Do atoms and molecules move? | All atoms and molecules move. They vibrate in a solid, slide in a liquid, move freely in a gas. |
| What does it mean if a substance is pure? | It only has one type of component |
| Formula for volume | Length X Width X Height |
| Formula for density | D = M/V Mass / Volume |
