QuestionAnswer
turbidity the cloudiness of a liquid due to a large number of particles suspended in the liquid.
pH a measure of how acidic or basic (alkaline) a substance is.
dissolved oxygen a measure of the amount of free oxygen dissolved in water.
nitrates a polyatomic ion with the molecular formula NO3- that enters water mainly from fertilizer runoff.
phosphorous element with the symbol P, usually present in water as the molecule phosphate (PO4).
fecal coliform bacteria bacteria that live in the digestive tract of warm-blooded animals, and are excreted in feces. They are the most common microbiological contaminant of natural waters.
colorimeter device that measures the absorbance of particular wavelengths of light by a specific solution.
deionized water water that has had almost all of its mineral ions removed.
macroinvertebrates animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. These bottom-dwelling animals include crustaceans and worms but most are aquatic insects.
riparian zone the ecological zone along the banks of a river, where land and water interact.
