Anabolic A chemical reaction in which small molecules join together to form larger ones
Biomolecules The chemical that make up living things (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins)
Calcium An important mineral needed for healthy bones and teeth and the formation of plant cell walls
Carbohydrates A biomolecule that contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the approximate ratio Cx(H2O)y
Catabolic A chemical reaction in which larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones
Cellulose A polysaccharide found in plant cell walls
Copper A trace element with symbol Cu
Deficiency A lack of something
Disaccharide A carbohydrate containing two sugar units
Fat Lipid that is solid at room temperature
Fructose A monosaccharide found in fruit and honey
Glucose A monosaccharide found in fruit. It is the main supplier of energy in the body
Glycogen A stored polysaccharide found in animal muscle and liver
Iron An important mineral that forms haemoglobin in the blood
Lactose A dissaccharide found in milk
Lipids Term used to describe fats, oils and lipids
Magnesium An important mineral plants use to make chlorophyll
Metabolism All chemical reactions taking place in our cells
Minerals Essential elements obtained by organisms in the form of dissolved salts
Monosaccharide The most simple carbohydrate made up of just one sugar unit
Peptide Small chain of amino acids
Polypeptide Chain of many peptides
Polysaccharide A carbohydrate containing many sugar molecules
Protein Long chains of amino acids folded up to form a 3D shape
Starch A polysaccharide found in bread and potatoes
Trace Elements Elements required in very small amounts
Zinc A trace element with symbol Zn
