Earth's Interior

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere Soft, flowing layer of the earth that contains convection currents.
Compositional layers Layers divided by what they are made up of.
Continental crust The part of the crust that makes up the continents.
Direct observation A method of making scientific discoveries using the five senses.
Indirect Observation A method of making scientific discoveries using data collected from scientific tools.
Inner Core The innermost layer of Earth that is made of solid iron and nickel.
Lithosphere The solid, outer layer of Earth that consists of the crust and upper mantle
Magnetosphere Earth’s magnetic field that extends beyond the atmosphere.
Mantle Layer of rock that is beneath Earth’s crust.
Mesosphere The lower part of the mantle that is made up of solid rock.
Oceanic crust The crust that is beneath the oceans.
Outer Core Layer made of liquid iron and nickel that may be responsible for Earth’s magnetic field.
Seismometer A scientific tool used to read seismic waves and study Earth’s layers.
Structural layers Layers divided by their physical properties and structure.
Seismic waves Energy released by earthquakes.
