| Presynaptic membrane | membrane on the synaptic terminal of the sending neuron |
| synaptic vesicles | the car storing the storing the neurotransmitter in the region of the presynaptic membrane |
| neurotransmiter | the chemical message released in to the synaptic cleft by exocytosis (active transport); the car is leaving the station |
| Synaptic cleft | space between pre and post synaptic membrane, the open rode between the cleft in your chin |
| postsynaptic membrane | membrane on the receiving neuron, membrane has receptor mediated ion channels |
