| mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| compound | 2 or more substances that are chemically combined ex. water |
| pure substance | Category of matter that is either an element or a compound |
| volume | The amount of space an object or substance takes up |
| element | simple pure substance that cannot be changed into a simpler substance ex. oxygen |
| density | \The amount of mass in a specific volume |
| exothermic reaction | loses or releases heat energy; resulting in a heating of the environment and cooling of the substance |
| mixture | 2 or more substances not chemically combined |
| endothermic reaction | absorbs heat energy; resulting in cooling of the environment and heating of the substance |
| compound | 2 or more elements that are chemically combined ex. water. 2 or more types of atoms |
| Chemical change | A process in which one or more substances are altered into one or more new and different substances, a reaction involving the rearrangement of atoms |
| Physical change | A usually reversible change in the properties of a substance. The appearance of the substance changes but its identity does not |
