Atoms and Molecules

TermDefinition
Atom The smallest basic unit of matter.
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom's nucleus.
Atomic Mass Number The numberof protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus.
Compound A substance that contains two or more different types of atoms bonded together.
Electron A negatively charged particle located outside an atom's nucleus.
Element A substance that only contains a sungle type of atom.
Group A vertical column in the Peiodic Table of Elements.
Isotope Atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons.
Proton A positively charged particle located in an atom's nucleus.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Metal An element that tends to be shiny, easily shaped, and a good conducter of electricity and heat.
Metalloid An element that has properties of both metals and non-metals.
Molecule A group of atoms that are held together by bonds; they act as a single unit.
Neutron A particle that has no electric charge and is located in the atom's nucleus.
Nonmetal An element that is not a metal and has propertiesgenerally opposite to those of a metal.
Nucleus The central region of an atom where most of the atom's mass is found. Contains protons and neutrons.
Period A horizontal row in the Periodic Table of Elements.
Periodic Table A table of elements, arranged by atomic number that shows the patterns in their properties.
