| acidification | the ongoing decrease in the pH of the earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere |
| adiabatic processes | one in which no heat is gained or lost by the system |
| anticyclone | a weather system with high atmospheric pressure at its center, around which air slowly circulates in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction |
| Coriolis effect | the apparent deflection of moving objects when the motion is decribed relative to a rotating reference frame |
| continental rise | an underwater feature found between the continental slope and the abyssal plain |
| guyot | an isolated underwater volcanic mountain with a flat top over 200 meters below the surface of the sea |
| seamount | a mountain rising from the ocean seafloor that does not reach to the water's surface and thus is not an island |
| abyssal plain | an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3000 and 6000m |
| benthos | the flora or fauna on the bottom or in the bottom sediments, of a sea, lake, or other body of water |
| circular orbital motion | circular motion of an object in an orbit around a fixed point. |
| pressure gradient | a physical quantity that describes which direction and at what rate the pressure changes the most rapidly around a particular location. |
