TermDefinition
Acidification The ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide.
Clean Air Act A United States federal law designed to control air pollution on a national level.
Dew Point Temperature to which the air would have to cool in order to reach saturation.
El Nino An irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the south pacific region every few years.
Greenhouse Effect The trapping of the sun's warmth in the planet's lower atmosphere due to radiation.
Hydro-thermal Vent An opening in the sea floor out of which heated mineral-rich water flows.
Inter-tidal Zone Known mostly as the foreshore/seashore. The area that is above water at low tide and underwater at high tide.
Mid-Ocean Ridge A long active submarine ridge system in the middle of an ocean basin and marking the up-welling of magma with seafloor spreading.
Nekton Aquatic animals that are able to swim and move independently of water currents.
Point Source Pollution Water pollution that comes from a single, discrete place. Typically a pipe.
