| Acidification | The ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide. |
| Clean Air Act | A United States federal law designed to control air pollution on a national level. |
| Dew Point | Temperature to which the air would have to cool in order to reach saturation. |
| El Nino | An irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the south pacific region every few years. |
| Greenhouse Effect | The trapping of the sun's warmth in the planet's lower atmosphere due to radiation. |
| Hydro-thermal Vent | An opening in the sea floor out of which heated mineral-rich water flows. |
| Inter-tidal Zone | Known mostly as the foreshore/seashore. The area that is above water at low tide and underwater at high tide. |
| Mid-Ocean Ridge | A long active submarine ridge system in the middle of an ocean basin and marking the up-welling of magma with seafloor spreading. |
| Nekton | Aquatic animals that are able to swim and move independently of water currents. |
| Point Source Pollution | Water pollution that comes from a single, discrete place. Typically a pipe. |
