Energy Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to do something. |
| Potential Energy | the mechanical energy that a body has by virtue of its position; stored energy |
| Kinetic Energy | energy that a body possesses by virtue of being in motion. |
| Mechanical Energy | energy in a mechanical form |
| Thermal Energy | Thermal energy is the part of the total potential energy and kinetic energy of an object or sample of matter that results in the system temperature. |
| Electrical Energy | electricity: energy made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor |
| Chemical Energy | that part of the energy in a substance that can be released by a chemical reaction; food or fuel |
| Nuclear Energy | the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion, especially when used to generate electricity. |
| Electromagnetic Energy | Radiant energy is the energy of electromagnetic waves |
| Gravitational Energy | Gravitational energy is the potential energy associated with the gravitational field. |
| Elastic Energy | potential energy that is stored when a body is deformed (as in a coiled spring) |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | conservation of energy: the fundamental principle of physics that the total energy of an isolated system is constant despite internal changes |
| Fossil Fuels | a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. |
| Energy Transformation | Energy transformation or energy conversion is the process of changing one form of energy to another |
| Renewable Resources | (renewable resource) any natural resource (as wood or solar energy) that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time |
| Nonrenewable Resources | Minerals, fossil fuels, and other materials present in essentially fixed amounts (within human time scales) in our environment. |
| Renewable Resource Example 1 | Solar Energy |
| Renewable Resource Example 2 | Geothermal Energy |
| Renewable Resource Example 3 | Wind Energy |
| Renewable Resource Example 4 | Biomass |
| Renewable Resource Example 5 | Hydropower |
| Nonrenewable Resources | Coal |
| Nonrenewable Resources | Petroleum/Oil |
| Nonrenewable Resources | Natural Gas |
| Nonrenewable Resources | Nuclear Power |
