QuestionAnswer
bacteria A large group of one-celled living things. They may cause disease.
microscope A tool that uses glass lenses to make an object look bigger so that it can be seen.
multicellular Made up of many cells.
unicellular Made up of one cell.
cell membrane A layer that goes around the liquid that holds the parts of the cell. It lets things in and out of the cell.
cell wall A covering around the cell membrane of plant cells and some tiny living things. It protects the cell.
chloroplast The part of the cell that holds the green coloring in the leaves of plants. It takes in the energy in light and changes it to chemical energy. It is also found in some green algae.
cytoplasm A thick material that is like jelly. It is found between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Most of the work of the cell takes place there.
eukaryotic cell A cell. The nucleus has the genetic material inside. Its surrounded by its own membrane.
mitochondria Cell parts that give off energy using oxygen. The oxygen helps break down sugars.
nucleus 1. The structure in a eukaryotic cell (a cell with a nucleus) that controls everything a cell does (Life Science). 2. The center of an atom. It is made of protons and neutrons (Physical Science).
organelle A structure in a cell. It is enclosed by a membrane. It has a certain role.
prokaryotic cell A cell that does not have a nucleus or organelles. It does not have chromosomes.
organ A group of tissues in a plant or animal. The tissues work together. They have a certain job.
organ system A group of organs. The organs work together. They help the body meet its needs for energy and materials.
specialization The specific organization of a cell and its structure. It lets the cell do a certain job.
tissue A group of like cells. The group of cells works together to do a certain job.
