What are the levels of organization in the human body? cells, tissues, organs, organ systems
What is the basic unit of structure and function in all living things? cells
What are the 4 basic types of tissues found in the human body? muscle, nervous, connective and epithelial tissues
What is the function of muscle tissue? movement
What is the function of nervous tissue? carries electrical messages
What is the function of connective tissue? provides support for your body and conncects all of its parts
What is the function of epitheal tissue? covers the surface of the body inside and out, as well as, proctect and absrob
What are examples of connective tissues? bones, fat, ligaments, tendons, blood
What is an organ system? a group of organs that work together to perform a major function
What is digestion? the breakdown of food into small molecules the body can use
Homeostasis the process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment
Stress the reaction of your body to potenially threatening, challenging, or disturbing events
Joints the place where two bones meet. joints allow bones to move in different ways
What are the three kinds of joints? immovable, movable, and partly movable
What are the 4 types of movable joints? hinge, ball-and-socket, pivot, sliding (gliding)
Ligaments strong connective tissue that holds bones together in movable joints
Tendon strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Where in the body are hinge joints found? elbows and knees
Where in the body are ball-and socket joints? hips and shoulders
Where in the body are pivot joints? your neck
Where in the body are sliding (gliding) joints? wrists and ankels
Cartilage a connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and protects the ends of bones
Compact bone hard and dense, but not solid
Osteoporosis a condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue? skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
Describe how muscles work in pairs while one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair relaxes/returns to its orignial length
