Fields of Earth Science/Scientific Method

Scientific Method A set of steps used to solve problems and answer questions
Astronomy Study of the universe; planets, stars, moon
Meteorology Study of the atmosphere, weather, climate
Oceanography/water Study of the oceans; tides, currents; rivers, streams, erosion
Geology Study of the Earth; materials that make up the Earth, processes; Earth's history
Lithosphere made up of the crust and upper-most mantle
Physical geology Study Earth's materials and processes; how it is today
Historical Geology Study Earth's history; how it has changed throughout time
Inference A conclusion you come to based on facts
Hydrosphere All of the water on Earth: salt water and fresh water; liquid, ice, water vapor
Atmosphere Layer of gases that surrounds the Earth; protects us from the sun's intense heat and rays
Geosphere made up of crust, mantle, core
Biosphere all life on Earth; found in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere
Plate Tectonic Theory used to explain earthquakes and volcanoes; the Earth's crust is divided into 7 large pieces called tectonic plates
Hypothesis an untested explanation
Theory an explanation that has been proven through an experiment
Satellite anything that orbits another object; can be natural, like the moon orbiting Earth, or artificial, like the satellites sent up into space by humans
Independent variable the variable that the experimenter changes; the thing that is being tested in the experiment
Dependent variable not changed by the experimenter; it changes in response to the independent variable
Control group the group of subjects that is left in the normal state
Experimental group the group of subjects that is give the experimental treatment in the experiment
