| earthquake | vibrations produced by the breaking of rock |
| magnitude | the measure of energy released during an earthquake |
| fault | the surface along which rocks move when they pass their elastic limits and break. |
| seismic wave | waves generated by an earthquake which can move the ground forward and backward, up and down, and side to side. |
| wave | rhythmic movement that carries energy through matter and space. |
| liquefaction | occurs when soil behaves more like a liquid during an earthquake. |
| focus | the point below Earth's surface where the energy is released during an earthquake. |
| epicenter | the point on the surface of Earth directly above the earthquake's focus |
| tsunami | seismic sea wave caused by earthquakes on or beneath the ocean floor. |
