Vocabulary for Test

earthquake vibrations produced by the breaking of rock
magnitude the measure of energy released during an earthquake
fault the surface along which rocks move when they pass their elastic limits and break.
seismic wave waves generated by an earthquake which can move the ground forward and backward, up and down, and side to side.
wave rhythmic movement that carries energy through matter and space.
liquefaction occurs when soil behaves more like a liquid during an earthquake.
focus the point below Earth's surface where the energy is released during an earthquake.
epicenter the point on the surface of Earth directly above the earthquake's focus
tsunami seismic sea wave caused by earthquakes on or beneath the ocean floor.
