| Doppler Effect | a shift in frequency due to relative motion |
| Red Shift | light waves emitted from an object that is moving away and are stretched out |
| Blue Shift | light waves emitted from an object that is moving towards you and are clumped together |
| Big Bang Theory | theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small space that 13 - 15 billion years ago exploded and began expanding in all directions |
| Light-year | a unit of distance which is approximately 9.5 x 10^12 km |
| Astronomy | study of the universe |
| Galaxy | collection of stars, dust, and gas bound together by gravity |

| Local group | group of galaxies; contains the Milky Way along with at least 44 other galaxies |
| Interstellar matter | the gas and dust located between the stars in a galaxy |
| Quasar | very luminous object that produces energy at a high rate; are thought to be the most distant objects in the universe |
