| fossil fuel | energy source that was formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms |
| nonrenewable | type of resource that, once consumed, cannot be replaced as quickly as it is used |
| nuclear | type of energy release ed in nuclear fission or fusion |
| chemical energy | energy in a substance that can be released by a chemical reaction |
| geothermal | Energy that is related to, or produced by, the internal heat of the earth |
| renewable | type of resource that is not depleted by use |
| solar energy | type of energy derived from the sun's rays |
| biomass | organic matter that is used as a fuel |
| Hydropower | energy created by running water |
| alternative energy | energy sources that do not use up natural resources or harm the environment |
| emissions | the production and discharge of something into the environment |
