Rock Cycle Vocab

Rock A solid mixture of crystallized mineral(s)
Rock cycle The process by which one type of rock changes to another.
Igneous Rock created by a volcano. Intrusive and extrusive are types of igneous rock.
Sedimentary When sediments are cemented together. It is either clastic or chemical.
Metamorphic Rock that is put under heat and pressure. Foliated and nonfoliated are types of metamorphic rock.
Compositon Types of minerals that make up a rock type.
Texture Sizes, shapes or positions of that grains make up rock
Intrusive Igneous rock that is formed underground - usually with bigger crystals
Extrusive Igneous rock that is formed above ground or close to the surface - generally with smaller crystals
Strata Layers found in rocks
Stratification The process by which sedimentary rocks form layers
Foliated Metamorphic rocks that have layers
Nonfoliated Metamorphic rocks that do not have layers
Weathering The process by which sediment particles are created from wind, ice, water, or chemicals
Erosion The process by which sediment particles are transported
