| osmosis | the diffusion of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane |
| passive transport | the movement of substances through a cell membrane without using the cell's energy |
| active transport | the movement of substances through a cell membrane using energy |
| endocytosis | the process when a cell surrounds a large particle and encloses it in a vesicle |
| facilitated diffusion | when molecules pass through a cell membrane using special proteins called transport protein |
| exocytosis | the process when a cell uses a vesicle to move a particle from within the cell to outside the cell |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants capture light energy from the sun and convert it into sugar |
| cellular respiration | when cells use oxygen to break down food |
| cell cycle | the regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo |
| homeostasis | the process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment |
| multicellular | consisting of many cells |
| unicellular | only consisting of one cell |
| semipermeable | a membrane that only allows certain substances to enter or leave |
| cell | the basic unit of structure and function of living things |
