What is the difference between science and technology? Science is the systematic study of creation using methods based on observation and experimentation. Technology is the application of science (ex: studying the interactions between fungi and bacteria led to the discovery of penicillin)
What are the 3 key elements of the cell theory? 1. All living things are composed of one or more cells. 2. A cell is the basic unit of life in all living things. All of the chemical reactions of a living organism occur within its cells. 3. All cells come from other cells.
How do plant and animal cells differ? Plant - large and rectangular, have a cell wall Animal - small and oval, don' have cell walls
What is the difference between cell theory and spontaneous generation theory? SG - Theory that living things can develop from nonliving matter (ex. maggots on meat) Cell theory - foundation of modern biology - all cells come from other cells
What is the primary source of energy for the earth? The sun
What did Louis Pasteur prove? His experiments with bacteria contradicted the theory of SG. Let to the theory that germs infect people. He developed pasteurization - the heat-treatment process that kills disease causing microorganisms in food and beverages like milk.
Are all cells microscopic? No. Most are, but some can be 3 m long (in a giraffe's leg).
What are the 7 major categories scientists use to classify living things? Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family genus, species.
