Experimental Design Vocabulary

TermDefinition
variable factors or things that are changed in an experiment
independent variable (IV) the factor that is purposely changed by the experimenter; the "I change" factor
levels of independent variable changes that are made in the independent variable
dependent variable (DV) the factor that responds
hypothesis a prediction about a relationship between the IV and the DV, written as an If... Then... statement
constants all factors that remain the same and have a fixed value
control the standard for comparing experimental effects
repeated trials the number of experimental repetitions, objects, or organisms tested at each level of the independent variable
title a statement describing an experiment or data table, written in the form of: "The Effect of Changes in the Independent Variable on the Dependent Variable"
experimental design diagram a diagram that summarizes the IV, DV, constants, control, number of repeated trials, hypothesis, and title
