Types of offence in law
Term | Definition |

Summary Offences | Least serious offence e.g. driving offences, common assault and criminal damage under £5000 Always tried at the Magistrates court |
Either Way Offences | Either very serious or less serious e.g. theft and assault causing actual bodily harm Tried at either the Magistrates court or Crown court depending how serious the offence is |
Indictable Offences | Most serious e.g. rape and murder Always tried in the Crown court. |
