energy

energy the ability to do work
chemical reaction one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
reactant are shown on the left side of the equation
product shown on the right side of the equation
metabolism the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism
activation energy the large amount of energy needed to start the reaction
catalyst reduce the amount of activation energy that is needed for the reaction to take place
enzyme a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed
redox reaction the reaction in which electrons are transferred between atoms - also called oxidation reduction reactions
oxidation reaction when a reactant loses an electron thus becoming more negative in charge
reduction reaction when a reactant gains one or more electrons thus becoming more negative in charge
