energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| energy | the ability to do work |
| chemical reaction | one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances |
| reactant | are shown on the left side of the equation |
| product | shown on the right side of the equation |
| metabolism | the term used to describe all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism |
| activation energy | the large amount of energy needed to start the reaction |
| catalyst | reduce the amount of activation energy that is needed for the reaction to take place |
| enzyme | a protein or RNA molecule that speeds up metabolic reactions without being permanently changed or destroyed |
| redox reaction | the reaction in which electrons are transferred between atoms - also called oxidation reduction reactions |
| oxidation reaction | when a reactant loses an electron thus becoming more negative in charge |
| reduction reaction | when a reactant gains one or more electrons thus becoming more negative in charge |
